During the Holiday season a powerful message is broadcast: we are to be our brother's keeper. Many years ago I made a commitment that changed my life. While hiking a well-used trail, I kept coming across trash...a candy wrapper, paper cup, or other trash.  It irritated and frustrated me.  What to do to eliminate this blight?  My frustration stemmed from the fact that I knew there was little or nothing I could do to stop it.  At that moment, Mahatma Gandhi's saying flashed in my mind:  "Be the change you seek."  I would surely not litter, but I could do more. I could become a self-appointed caretaker or steward of the places and things I care about. No one has to hire, appoint or swear you in.  It's your own commitment and a solemn one. I started quietly doing what I could to change and protect this precious Earth. That same day, I picked up what trash I could.  It's quite amazing, once the commitment is made, how many opportunities exist to do something valuable, instead of just walking by. Imagine the result if everyone did something.  From Paul Van Dam (edited)
